Obituary

Ann Barta, 104, of 1833 1st Street S.W., died Monday morning, February 27, 2012 at Heritage Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Services: 11:00 A.M. Thursday at Papich-Kuba Janeba Chapel West, 1604 "J" Street S.W., by Rev. William Harnish. Burial: Czech National Cemetery. Friends may call after 10:00 A.M. Thursday at the funeral chapel.

Ann is survived by 2 children, Beverly Sheely, Lake Oswego, Oregon and David Barta, rural Cedar Rapids; 3 grandchildren, Michael (Eileen) Sheely, Aloha, Oregon, Jade (Allison) Barta and Mindy (David) Sorg, both of Cedar Rapids; 5 great-granchildren, James Sheely, Portland, Oregon, Courtney Sheely, Hillsboro, Oregon, Emma, Carlie and Landon Sorg, all of Cedar Rapids; sister, Sue Roth, Cedar Rapids; 3 nieces, Lana McBride, Marcy Barta and Susan Kerr; a nephew, Bob Barta and her special friend, Pupek.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Felix, a Cedar Rapids Police Officer who was killed in the line of duty February 15, 1961, her parents, Joseph and Anna (Michna) Kovacik, brothers Paul and Mike Kovacik and a sister Mildred Gearhart.

Ann was born December 12, 1907 in Cicero, Illinois and came to Cedar Rapids with her family in 1925. She married Felix A. Barta on June 6, 1931 in Cedar Rapids. Ann worked at the Me-Too Grocery on 16th Avenue S.W. and later at the Jupiter Discount Store until her retirement.

She was a member of Hus Memorial Presbyterian Church and its Tabitha Society until it disbanded. Ann loved flower gardening and her yard was a rainbow of colors with its geraniums, marigolds and pansies. She also enjoyed doing embroidery, cooking and going fishing.

Ann was a good wife, a good mother and a great grandmother.

Ann's family would like to especially thank her doctors, the staff at Heritage Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and Hospice of Mercy for the wonderful care she received these past few years.
