Charles Albert Fisher, 93, of Cedar Rapids, died Saturday evening, May 7, 2016 at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha.
Funeral Mass: 10:30 A.M. Wednesday at Saint Ludmila's Catholic Church by Father Dennis Juhl. Burial: Saint Joseph's Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 P.M. Tuesday at Papich-Kuba Funeral Home East, 1228 2nd Street S.E., where a vigil service begins at 7:00 P.M.
Survivors include Laverne Fisher, his wife of 69 years; his children, Susan Stolba (John) Houser of Cedar Rapids, Dr. Thomas Fisher of Buena Vista, Colorado, Joyce (Greg) Gibney of Lincoln, Nebraska and Laura (Russ) Triplett of Cedar Rapids.
Nine grandchildren, Hannah Stolba, Andrew (Libby) Fisher, Dylan Fisher, Riley Fisher, Matt Gibney, Chad Gibney, Sydney Triplett, Samantha Triplett and Erik Triplett and two great-grandchildren, Logan Fisher and Henry Fisher.
Four brothers, Robert Fisher of Cedar Rapids, Richard (Donna) Fisher of Cedar Rapids, Steve (Linda) Fisher of California and Gary (Leah) Fisher of Arkansas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Elsie (Gregor) Fisher and his son-in-law, Thomas Stolba.
Charles was born October 21, 1922 in Cedar Rapids and graduated from Wilson High School in January, 1941. The highlight of his school years was seeing Nile Kinnick play in three games at Iowa and running in the Drake Relays.
He served in the Army from January, 1943 to February, 1946 as a radar operator. Charlie always thanked Uncle Sam for the leave in August, 1944, when by chance, he met the love of his life and guiding light, Laverne. They were married November 19, 1946 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Walford.
Charlie worked in the floor covering trade most of his life. He had worked for Hepner's, Cartright's and retired from House of Carpets, but continued to work part time until he was 90.
He was a member of WFLA Lodge 500, V.F.W. Post 788, American Legion Post 572 in Fairfax, Elks Lodge 262 and Knights of Columbus Council 909.
He thanked his wife for their visiting all the states including Alaska and Hawaii and also Europe. He thanked the Lord for the wonderful life he was given. He was proud of his Czech heritage and his family.
Military graveside services will be conducted by Fairfax American Legion Post 572.
Memorials may be given to Saint Ludmila's Catholic Church.
