Charles L. Johnson, 64, of Cedar Rapids, died Monday morning, May 22, 2017 at Mercy Medical Center. Memorial Services will be held at 1:30 P.M. Friday at Papich-Kuba Funeral Home East, 1228 2nd Street S.E., with Deacon Jim Berger officiating. Burial will follow at the Czech National Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family after 12:30 P.M. Friday at the funeral home.

Charles is survived by his sons, Todd and Chad Johnson, both of Cedar Rapids; daughters, Shelly Johnson, Austin, Minnesota and Sheree Tufte, Albert Lea, Minnesota; grandchildren, Bertena, Brayden and Tytus Johnson; and his siblings, Patty Johnson, Mason City, Gregory Van Horn, Cedar Rapids, David Van Horn, Bobby Van Horn, Buck Van Horn and Billy Van Horn, all of Clear Lake.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene, on October 20, 2015, and his mother, Janice (Tobey) Johnson Van Horn, stepfather, Dean Van Horn, and infant daughter, Jackie Johnson.

Charles was born on December 16, 1952 in Mason City and moved to Cedar Rapids from the Clear Lake and Mason City areas in 1975. He had been employed as a union roofer for A.D. Holts and later T & K Roofing in Ely.

Charles was a member of Roofers, Waterproofers and Allied Workers Union Local #182. In his younger days, he enjoyed going fishing.

A memorial fund has been established.
