Donald Frank Teply, 92, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, November 2, 2025, at the Woodlands. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, November 5, 2025, St. Ludmila Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, with a visitation starting at 9:00 a.m. Private family Burial: St. John's Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Papich-Kuba Funeral Home East is assisting the family with services.
Don was born on June 2, 1933, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Frank and Hanna (Hilmer) Teply. He was united in marriage to Judy Jecmenek, his high school sweetheart, on June 25, 1955, at St. Ludmila Catholic Church, 70 years of marriage in June.
Don graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School. He started work at Iowa Electric two days after he graduated. In 1969 he transferred to Duane Arnold Energy Center, helping to start up the nuclear power station. He was a shift supervisor until he returned to prairie Creek Power Station as superintendent. He retired at the age of 59 with 41 years of service. He wanted to be a member of the "100 Club".
Don served two years in the service from 1953-1955. He was station in Germany in 1954-1955. Don was a member of VFW 788 and the Lisbon Legion Post 109.
Don enjoyed golf, hunting, camping, fishing, softball, and bowling. In 1977 they started to travel out west to hunt and visit friends. Always looking for a reasonable and warm climate to play golf. They found a resort in Alimo, Texas, that had a golf course that came with the rent.
Don spent his time making Uncle Sam lawn ornaments, creating over 1200 that are North American wide.
Don and Judy spent 20 years in the Rio Grande Valley. In 1988 they bought a cabin in Wisconsin, spending 35 years with family and friends fishing and golfing.
He was a charter member of the Eastern Iowa Field Trial Association. For some years he raised English Setter dogs and entered them into field trials.
Don kept the faith and was a lifetime member of St. Ludmila Catholic Parish.
Don is survived by his wife, Judy; children, Michael (Patti) Teply, Mark (Patty) Teply, Matthew (Barb) Teply, and Martin (Maria) Teply; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brother, Richard Teply; sister-in-law, Suzy Wilbur; special niece, Julie; many relatives and friends, especially Dennis and Michele Walker.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings, Bob Sommers, Betty Jean Hass, and Glenn Teply.
