Dorothy Wharton, 99, passed away peacefully with her sons by her side on Thursday, November 21, 2024, at the Oldorf Hospice House, Hiawatha. Visitation will be at 4-7:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 24, 2024, at Papich Kuba Funeral Home. Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, November 25, 2024, at Papich Kuba Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Linwood Cemetery.
Dorothy was born September, 20, 1925, at 1333 6th Street NW, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in the front bedroom, daughter to Lowell and Minnie (Copp) Davis. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1942 and was united in marriage to Lewis Wharton on June 30, 1943, in Cedar Rapids. They were married 59 years until his passing in 2002. During WW2 Dorothy worked for Curtiss-Wright in Columbus, Ohio, and was transferred to Nevada as a clerk for the naval ammunition plant. After Lewis's honorable discharge they came back to Iowa. Dorothy held various jobs; being a homemaker, secretary for various companies, Collins Radio, and a bookkeeper for Cedar Rapids Paint/Phelan's Interior Design Company.
Dorothy enjoyed and was involved in activities and hobbies that her kids and grandkids were a part of, including sports, racing, and spending time with her family. She loved crocheting, knitting, sewing, and was an avid cross stitcher. She sewed many wedding gowns and bridesmaid's dresses for kids, grandkids, and many others. Dorothy "Aunt Dorothy" was known by everyone to be kind; her door was open to anyone.
She was a member of Cedar Valley Chapter Embroideries Guild of America.
She is survived by her children, Lois (Gary) Wilson, Don (Marilyn) Wharton, Sam (Joan) Wharton, and Bill (Kelly) Wharton; twelve grandchildren, twenty-four great-grandchildren; and five great great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Lewis Wharton; siblings, Elmer Davis, Robert Davis, Margaret Schulte, and Kenny Davis; infant sons, Lewis Wharton Jr. and Duane Wharton; and granddaughters, Tina Wharton and Anna Wharton.
Memorials may be made to Stonebridge Church or Cedar Valley Chapter Embroideries Guild of America.
