Francis John Sheely, 88, of Cedar Rapids, died early Wednesday, January 8, 2014 at Mercy Medical Center.
Funeral Mass: 10:30 A.M. Saturday at Saint Ludmila Catholic Church by Father Dennis Juhl. Burial: Saint John's Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 P.M. Friday at Papich-Kuba Funeral Home East, 1228 2nd Street S.E., and after 9:30 A.M. Saturday at the church.
Francis is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mavis; children, Marcia and Edward Engel, Ely, Iowa; Cheryl and Ronald Croy, Phoenix, Oregon; Patricia Sheely-Adolphson and Curt Adolphson, San Antonio, Texas; Michelle Sheely, Cedar Rapids; Kristine and David Heeren, Bloomfield, Iowa; Jacqueline and Dave Patterson, Ladora, Iowa; Carleen and Jay Kirkland, Springfield, Oregon; Angela and Dave Kern, Johnston, Iowa; Roberta and Paul Cisar, Bellevue, Nebraska; Melinda and Tod Keiffer, Crestview, Florida and son-in-law, Mark Johnson, Cedar Rapids; 24 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, 2 sisters, 1 brother and special friends/neighbors for over 50 years, Kris, Hank, Bev, Dave and Sandy.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Janet, infant son, John, granddaughter, grandson, parents and a sister.
Francis was born June 28, 1925 at Coggon to John and Agnes (Woods) Sheely. He was a 1943 graduate of Coggon High School. Francis was an Army veteran, Private 1st Class – 36th Infantry Divisions Texas/Oklahoma Reserve, World War II serving in France, Italy and England. He married Mavis D. Sparrgrove in November, 1949 at Saint John's Catholic Church in Coggon. They lived in Cedar Rapids since 1958, moving from Marion. Francis was employed as an operating engineer for the International Operating Engineers Local 234 for over 50 years retiring in 2003.
He was a member of Saint Ludmila Catholic Church and the Disabled American Veterans.
Frank enjoyed traveling with his family on Sunday drives and the long trips to Florida, Texas, Oregon and Alaska.
Francis' family would like to extend special thanks to Sister Mary Frances Michalec of Saint Ludmila Catholic Pastoral Ministry for all of her support and to the many care givers at Mercy Medical Center.
Military honors will be conducted by American Legion Post 727.
A memorial fund has been established.
