Obituary

George W. Du Charme, 85, of Cedar Rapids, died unexpectedly Monday afternoon, July 3, 2017 at Mercy Medical Center.

Funeral Mass: 10:00 A.M. Monday at Saint Wenceslaus Catholic Church by Father Christopher Podhajsky. Friends may call from 3 to 8 P.M. Sunday at Papich-Kuba Funeral Home East, 1228 2nd Street S.E. where a Knights of Columbus Rosary will begin at 5:30 P.M.

George is survived by his children, George L. Du Charme, Cedar Rapids, Gary S. (Cheryl) Du Charme, Vinton and Victoria L. Sullivan, Cedar Rapids; daughter-in-law, Wendy Baltisberger, Watkins; sixteen grandchildren; twenty-nine great-grandchildren; brother, Jim (Pat) Du Charme, Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin and a special friend, Betty Merta, Lisbon.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty; two sons, Randy and Ronald Du Charme; great-granddaughter, Mattison Perkins; parents, Lawrence and Grace (Konicek) Du Charme and brother, Ron Du Charme.

George was born February 22, 1932 in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin and later moved to Cedar Rapids for work. He married Betty A. Duha on May 16, 1953 in Eastman, Wisconsin. Betty died August 30, 1993. George was employed at Wilson and Company Meat Packing Plant, later Farmstead Foods, for almost 40 years. He then worked for the Cedar Rapids Parks Department from 1987 to 1993.

George was a longtime member of Saint Wenceslaus Catholic Church where he sang in the choir. He was a former president and current vice-president of Cadets of Saint George Branch W045 FCSLA (formerly Catholic Workman). George was an actively involved member of Knights of Columbus Council 909 for many years. He was also a Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus member of Bowen General Assembly 269.

George enjoyed hunting and taking family fishing trips. He was a collector of coins and guns and enjoyed going on bus trips to the casino with the Cadets of Saint George. George was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and loved seeing them win the World Series.
