Obituary

Harold E. "Bud" Porter Sr., 85, of Cedar Rapids, died at his home Sunday evening, February 12, 2012. Services: 11 a.m. Friday at Papich-Kuba Funeral Home East, 1228 Second St. SE, Cedar Rapids by the Rev. William Harnish. Military honors will be conducted by American Legion Post 727. Friends may visit from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Harold is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary; eight children, Richard (Nancy) Porter, Ruth (Larry) VanDeusen and Beverly Jean (Mike) Gutierrez, all of Cedar Rapids, Harold Jr. (Shirley) Porter of Lakewood, Colo., Gary Porter of Ely, Michael (Shelley) Porter of Parker, Colo., and Mitchell (Mary) Porter and James (Jennifer) Porter, both of Cedar Rapids; 20 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Norma Johnson of Creston.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Loda Earl "Jack" and Myrtle (Mullen) Porter; and three brothers, Robert, Homer and Donald.

Harold was born February 28, 1926, on a farm near Afton and lived in Cedar Rapids since he was 22 years old. He had attended Duke University in Durham, N.C., following his service in the Navy Air Corps during World War II. "Bud" married Mary E. Franks on Nov. 27,1949, at Sinclair Memorial Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids. He had worked as a tree trimmer and at Iowa Steel and Iron Works before being employed as a driver for Hometown Dairy for 35 years until his retirement.

"Bud" always loved being outdoors and taking care of his home and yard.
