Obituary

James B. Van Weelden, 80, of rural Fairfax, passed away at his home Saturday evening, September 11, 2021.

A Celebration of Jim's Life will be held from 1 to 4 P.M. Sunday, September 19 th at Papich-Kuba Funeral Home East, 1228 2 nd Street S.E., Cedar Rapids.  Private Family Burial will take place at a future date at the Fairfax Cemetery.

Jim was born February 13, 1941 in Oskaloosa to John and Wilhemina (De Rooi) Van Weelden, the second of four siblings.  Following high school graduation, Jim enlisted in the Army National Guard.  He later moved to Cedar Rapids and worked for Network Data Processing.  Jim was united in marriage to Jo Ann Kriva on June 24, 1967 in Chelsea, Iowa.  For 30 years, he owned and operated Van Weelden Construction Company.

Jim was a member of the East Central Iowa Two Cylinder Club and enjoyed collecting antique tractors.  He also enjoyed fishing, bowling and  watching all types of sports on television, especially baseball, football and basketball.

Jim is survived by his wife, Jo Ann, of 54 years; two sons, Cory (fiancée Barb Miller) Van Weelden, Central City and Craig (Heather) Van Weelden, Fairfax; five grandchildren, Brooke, Caelen, Courtney, Collin and Benjamin; a great-granddaughter, Harper; siblings, Arleen (Max) Jacobs, New Sharon, Jerry (Jill) Van Weelden, Ocala, Florida and Marilyn (Ervin) Edel, Oskaloosa and several nieces and nephews.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents.

Jim's family would especially like to thank the staff of UnityPoint Hospice for the wonderful care and support they provided to both Jim and his family.

Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society.
