Obituary

LeRoy C. LaBarge, 87, of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday afternoon, September 17, 2014 at Mercy Medical Center.

Funeral Mass: 10:00 A.M. Monday at Saint Patrick Catholic Church by Father David Beckman. Burial: 2:00 P.M. Monday at Saint Joseph's Cemetery, Prairieburg. Friends may call from 4 to 7 P.M. Sunday at Papich-Kuba Funeral Home East, 1228 2nd Street S.E., and after 9:00 A.M. Monday at the church. A rosary begins at 6:30 P.M. Sunday at the funeral home.

LeRoy is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary; children, Jennie (Larry) McEowen, Cedar Rapids, Jeannie Nolte, Marion and Andre (Lori) LaBarge, Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Nicole LaBarge, Zachary (Brenda) LaBarge, Kathryn (Martin) Janss, Kimberly Nolte, David (Catherine) Nolte, Derek Nolte and John Moses; great-grandchildren, Spencer Janss, Maureen Nolte and Jacob Moses; siblings, LaVerne (Carolyn) LaBarge and Kathleen LaBarge, both of Anamosa, Francis (Patricia) LaBarge, Fairfax, Rosemary LaBarge and Donald J. LaBarge, both of Marion.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Clara (Lawrence) LaBarge.

LeRoy was born August 18, 1927 at home in rural Stone City and graduated from Central City High School in 1945. He moved from Prairieburg to Cedar Rapids in 1952 and married Mary L. Hawley on May 15, 1956 at Saint Patrick Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids. LeRoy was employed as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 30 years, retiring in 1988.

LeRoy served in the Army from 1945 to 1949 and in the Coast Guard from 1949 to 1954.

He was a member of NALC Branch 373 where he held many offices over the years. LeRoy was a 37 year member of the Board of Directors of the First Federal Credit Union. He served as a Boy Scouts troop leader in his younger years. He was a life member of Knights of Columbus Council 909 where he had served as Grand Knight and also Bowen General Assembly 269 Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus. LeRoy was a member of Cadets of Saint George Branch 45 F.C.S.L.A. (formerly Catholic Workman).

LeRoy enjoyed playing euchre, fishing, antiques and collecting coins. He also liked to work at and attend the Lenten fish fries at both Saint Patrick's and K of C Council 909.

American Legion Post 421, Central City, will conduct military graveside services.

The family would like to thank Doctors Cearras, Kutteh and Lee as well as the Mercy ICU staff for the wonderful care they gave LeRoy.

Memorial contributions may be given to Camp Courageous and the ARC of East Central Iowa.
