Obituary

Richard Milton Boalbey, 92, a resident of the Iowa Veterans Home, Marshalltown, formerly of Cedar Rapids, passed away there early Wednesday, April 4, 2018

Born October 2, 1925 in Cairo, Illinois to Solomon and Rose Boalbey, Richard was one of nine children, spending his early life working at their family grocery and coal delivery service in Cairo.

During World War II, Richard was drafted into military service while in his senior year of high school. He received his diploma by mail at graduation time from Cairo High School. Stationed in New Guinea, Richard served as a Navy warehouseman. At the same time, three of his brothers, Ellis (Army), John (Army) and Tofake (Navy) also served their country during World War II. All four Boalbey brothers came home safely at war's end.

Returning to the Midwest, Richard lived in Cedar Rapids for several years, later moving to the Quad Cities, Illinois area where he was employed by International Harvester Company of East Moline, Illinois. In 2016, Richard returned to Cedar Rapids, moving to the Iowa Veterans Home in February, 2018.

Richard is survived by one sister, Lorene Nassif, Anamosa; five daughters, Judith, Margaret, Mary, Barbara and Kathryn; a special nephew and his wife, Walter Jr. and Marilyn Homsey, Marion; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Solomon and Rose, and his siblings, Marie Homsey, Edna Parker, Lutefa Malooley, Ellis, John, Tofake and Joseph Boalbey.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday at Papich-Kuba Funeral Home East, 1228 2 nd Street S.E., with the Very Rev. Fr. Fred Shaheen, Saint George Antiochian Orthodox Church, Cedar Rapids, officiating. Visitation will be one hour before the services.

Graveside military honors and private family burial will be conducted at Green Lawn Memorial Gardens, Villa Ridge, Illinois at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be given to Saint George Antiochian Orthodox Church, Cedar Rapids.
