Robert J.
Garland
July 4, 1963 – August 6, 2021
Robert Garland of Cedar Rapids passed on August 6, 2021 from stroke complications. Born on July 4, 1963 to Tom and Vicki Garland, his memory will be held with love by his wife, champion, and strongest advocate, Julie, their son Brandon and Shelby, and his loyal companions Apollo and Comet. He is also survived by mother Vicki, brothers Jason and Ryan, sisters Kathy, Judy, Rhonda, and Mitzie and their families. Also sister-in-law Vicki (Scott) Comer family plus extensive family in Boone, Iowa and Decatur, Alabama.
Robb graduated from Regis in 1982 and worked a number of jobs throughout his life, making friends and learning new skills along the way. His mind and body knew no limitations! Whether it be towing cars at Miller's or Darrah's, working in the medical profession at both Mercy and St. Luke's, delivering building supplies at Roofing Wholesale or King's, juggling semis at Cedar River Paper for Lazer Spot, or the countless tasks performed at ADM.
His favorite pastime was anything that included motors, watching the races, or working on cars. If it had an engine, he was always up to the challenge-whether building it or driving it, from a dirt bike as a child to a train in his later years, of which he was very proud. His greatest serenity was feeling the wind in his face on his Harley. He and Julie were known to see a mutual day off as a road trip day and shared many hours driving country roads and exploring. Thankfully he was always ready to answer the call when someone broke down on the side of the road!
Some of Robb's proudest life moments came from being a band dad. He loved to watch his son on stage and bond with the other parents in the audience. He found great joy in hauling equipment, helping load up, and teaching his son how to pull a trailer. He even drove to Dallas, Texas as a surprise to watch Brandon perform at a festival.
Anyone who shared meals with him will understand the goat reference. Not one to let a leftover go uneaten, he could make even the least adept cook feel special. He became an expert at plate swapping when his was empty. He also loved sitting around the fire pit and sharing stories.
Robb's strength in overcoming physical challenges served him well in his final years. Whether a crushed foot recovery happily kept warm by handmade boot creations from his Mother-in-law or the bones of others skillfully placed to keep his head above his shoulders (earning him the nickname Robb Zombie), his determination and sheer force of will can not go unmentioned.
His family will be forever grateful for the highly skilled resources found that fateful day in Ohio as well as the entire staff of Mercy Medical Center, Hospice of Mercy, Area Ambulance, and Cedar Rapids Fire Station #7 helping through the challenges of the last few years.
Burial: Thursday, August 12 th in Boone, Iowa.
