Obituary

Rose Marie (Dryml) Burke, 84, Cedar Rapids, died Thursday morning, December 4, 2014 at Mercy Hallmar.

Funeral Mass: 10:00 A.M. Tuesday at Saint Wenceslaus Catholic Church with Fathers Christopher Podhajsky and Kevin O'Dell concelebrating. Burial: Saint John's Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Monday at Papich-Kuba Funeral Home East, 1228 2nd Street S.E., where the rosary begins at 7:30 P.M.

Rose is survived by her husband of 56 years, David; children, Christopher (Michele) Burke, Marion and Clarice (Les) Flanders, Knoxville, Iowa; grandchildren, Abraham, Abigail, Anna and Aidan Flanders; brother-in-law, Burton W. Odell, Cedar Rapids; sister-in-law, Patricia Burke, Austin, Minnesota and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Rose (Stejskal) Dryml and brother and sister-in-law, Johnny and Eileen Dryml.

Rose Marie was born August 28, 1930 in Cedar Rapids and was a lifelong resident. She graduated from Saint Wenceslaus High School in 1948 and received her Teaching Degree from Mount Mercy College in June, 1950. Rose was a kindergarten teacher in Viola for 3 years and then in the Marion School District for 6 years. During her teaching career, she was also the playground director in the summer at Whitam and Sinclair Parks in Cedar Rapids.

Rose married David on June 7, 1958 at Saint Wenceslaus Catholic Church. David and Rose were members of Saint Wenceslaus Church the past seven years and were former members of All Saints Catholic Church for almost 50 years.

At All Saints Church, Rose was chairperson of both the spring Thrift Sale and the fall Country Store for 40 years until her retirement on December 25, 2003.

Rose Marie was very proud of her Czech heritage and was a member of the National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library. Her husband, David, often called Rose his "Garnet Girl" because of her love of all things Czech.

Rose Marie and David were very fortunate to have many opportunities to travel extensively both in the United States and throughout the world.

Rose was a member of the women's auxiliary of V.F.W. Post 788. She was also an avid collector of stuffed teddy bears.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Saint Wenceslaus Catholic Church, the National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library or a charity of the donor's choice.
