Susan Engel

Susan Elaine Engel, 74, of Ely, Iowa, passed away on Monday, October 19, 2026. Private family burial will be held at Czech National Cemetery. Papich-Kuba Funeral Service is assisting the family with arrangements.

Susan was born on July 7, 1952, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of Raymer and Pauline (Pata) Engel. She graduated from Prairie High School in 1970.

Susan was a Master Gardener with a high level of knowledge. This knowledge started at a very young age, where she gardened with her family. The garden provided life for the farm.

Susan is survived by her, brothers, George (Pat) Engel and Edward (Marcia) Engel; brother-in-law, Richard Schutlz; aunts, Mabel Pata, Stella Pata, and Georgina Kline; nieces and nephews, Sonja (Kevin) Hadenfeldt, Ben Engel, Katrina (Kevin) Groves, Dr. Shannon Engel, and Nikki (Mike) Fernholz; great-nieces and nephews, Dylan (Malinda) Hadenfeldt, Teal (Martin) Rounds, Isabella, Helen, and Naomi Engel, and Preston, Lorelai, Cohen, Gunther, Summer, and Louis Fernholz; her furry pets, Pepper and Roxie; and her Amazon Parrot CB (Chicken Bird) her companion for 48 years.

Susan was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Patricia Schutlz; and nephew, Eric Schutlz.

The family would like to extend their appreciation to Mercy Hospice for the excellent care Susan received.
